Police & Military Hats
Many professions require a uniform, especially those in which public safety is a factor. It helps team members find others in the group more readily, offers psychological benefits, and conveys safety, strength, and trust. Some of the professions that require wearing a uniform include police officers, military personnel, fire & rescue personnel, medical professionals, and more.
Police officers began wearing uniforms in 1854. The practice was first implemented in New York City, then Boston and Chicago. Other places in the United States followed in their own timing. Uniforms in the early years were simply army uniforms from the civil war. At that time, police hats were like top hats. Some places, however, used a style referred to as a custodian helmet.
By the 20th century, police uniforms and cop hats were changing. Today, police headgear is either a peaked hat, baseball hat, or campaign hat. These types of hats fit comfortably around the head and are made of soft material. All three styles have a brim of some type, which is helpful to keep out the sun. The campaign hat, in particular, has a wider brim and is used primarily by police on horseback who need additional protection.
From physical comfort to psychological impact, police officers wear hats for a number of reasons. Here are just a few:
- Police hats, just like uniforms, let civilians know that an officer is present.
- The presence of the police hat (or any other “symbol” of the police) helps keep people under control.
- Police hats contain the officer’s badge number if needed.
- Police hats show other police where his/her co-workers are, thus boosting their security.
- The police hat provides protection from outdoor elements
