When choosing to conceal and carry, the holster you use becomes just as important as the firearm itself. The concealment holster not only allows you to carry a firearm discreetly but also keeps it secured to your body and prevents the trigger from getting caught on anything. The are various styles of concealed carry holsters, and the one you choose will depend on your personal preference. It’s also important to consider what fits most comfortably to your body and what position you prefer to draw your firearm from if the need arises.

Types of Holsters for Concealed Carry

IWB Holsters

IWB, which stands for Inside the Waistband, is one of the most popular options for concealing and carrying. It’s designed to sit close to your body on the inside of your waistband and will either attach with a belt clip or rely on the tension of your belt and waistband to stay in place. 

There are various ways to mount the IWB holster around the waist. The most common positions include the 3’o clock or 9 o’clock carry at the hips, the 12 o’clock carry at the belly button or the 6 o’clock carry at the middle of the back. You can also choose to carry at the kidneys (4 o’clock or 8 o’clock) or the appendix (2 o’clock or 10 o’clock).

The BlackHawk A.R.C. IWB Holster is an extremely versatile and comfortable option for those who prefer the appendix carry position. This inside waistband holster is constructed from soft, yet durable injection-molded polymer for all-day comfort. It’s also fully reversible, ambidextrous, and adjustable with two cant and ride height adjustment clips. On top of that, it can be used in conjunction with pistols featuring rear-mounted red dot sights.

OWB Holsters

The OWB, “Outside the Waistband”, is a type of holster that sits at the waistband on the outside of your pants. It’s mainly used for open carry but also works well as a CCW option when worn with a coat or loose shirt. It’s a great alternative for those who find IWB carry to be too uncomfortable and is available in a variety of styles such as the belt slide, pancake, or paddle holster.

The Gould & Goodrich 3 Slot Pancake Holster is made to hug your body comfortably for maximum concealment. This outside the waistband holster features top-grain leather construction with a front cut-down design for a quick draw. There are three slots that allow you to wear it sitting straight up or tilted on your strong side. This OWB holster will also fit semi-automatics or revolvers and comes with a reinforced thumb break with a coated snap.

Shoulder Holsters

A shoulder holster is a great option for concealing firearms with a larger frame. This system has two straps that go over your shoulders and join at the middle of your upper back. One side will have the gun holster that sits at your underarm, while the other usually has a magazine pouch for ammunition. When worn with a jacket or blazer, this system becomes completely concealed. Those who sit for long periods at a desk or in a vehicle may find this to be a more comfortable alternative to waistband carry.

The Aker Leather Flatside XR7 Shoulder Rig is specially designed with a Comfort-Flex double harness for even weight distribution on your shoulders. This concealed carry shoulder holster is cut from soft, strong leather and features a dual magazine pouch on the opposite side of the firearm. The shoulder harness prevents the center piece from riding up and the twin harness tabs keep the firearm’s grip positioned close to your body for greater concealment.

Ankle Holsters

The ankle holster is a great concealment option for smaller firearms and works well as a backup solution to your primary gun. This type of holster comes in handy while seated or low to the ground. It has a padded strap that wraps around the ankle of your support leg, with the firearm facing the inside position. The pants you wear over the holster will need to be longer with a wide bottom for complete concealment and easy accessibility.

Made for deep concealment and comfort, the Galco Ankle Holster will easily fit a semiautomatic pistol or double-action revolver. This Galco holster is constructed of premium steerhide stitched to a neoprene band and accommodates ankles up to 13 inches in circumference. This wide ankle band also has a hook-and-loop fastener for security and comes padded with sheepskin for additional comfort.
