History
So, how did the world get along before flashlights were invented? Here's a timeline:
The Beginning: The Sun
Upside: the sun provided all the light there was.
Downside: wandering around in the dark could get you a stubbed toe, at the very least, or dead at the base of a cliff, at the very worst.
70,000 BC: The Torch
Upside: Natural materials (fur or wool) soaked in animal fat, wound around a stout piece of wood, ignited and burned. A portable light source.
Downside: burned bodies, property, landscape.
3,000 BC: Candles
Upside: candles invented. Lit up the dark. Portable.
Downside: hot wax dripped all over. Full-body bikini wax!
400 BC: Fat or Oil Holder
Upside: animal fat or oil in holder lit and burned for hours.
Downside: scorched body parts and property.
ca 100 AD: Candle Holder with Handle
Upside: candle in holder with handle, fewer burned fingers.
Downside: breeze blows out candle, in the dark again.
ca 150 AD: Lantern Invented
Upside: light on a windy night
Downside: for the time, there was none. It was all good!
1898: Flashlight Invented
Conrad Hubert, owner of the American Ever Ready Battery Company, combines a metal tube, one of his batteries and a light bulb. He made the world's first flashlight!
