Solutions like Muzzle were created especially for use against attacking canines. Their tear ducts are not the same as humans, and therefore aren't affected by sprays that cause excessive tearing. Rather, canine-specialized solutions affect respiration and cause immediate dilation of the capillaries in the eyes resulting in temporary blindness.
Other effects, such as swelling and irritation of the mucous membranes, severe burning sensation, coughing, gagging, and disorientation, are possible. With an effective range of up to 10 feet, animal defense sprays can incapacitate dogs, cats and other domesticated animals before they attack. Rabid animals may be less affected.
